When Xena Goes Gray

“When Xena Goes Gray” is an online zine created to recognize, celebrate, inspire, and empower “Gen X” women and nonbinary folx who were reared on Ms. PacMan, Riot Grrrls, Xena the Warrior Princess, Patty Smyth/Patti Smith and Siouxsie Sioux.

Here in the United States (this blog intends to gradually highlight women around the globe), we were the first generation of women out of the *Title 9 starting gate…and now we are starting to sprout some gray hairs. The calendar says we are on path to becoming the wise womyn crones, but we have no intention of slowing down or giving up our sports, our activism, our artistic expression any time soon.

We ain’t the AARP crowd. (–though I hear membership does afford great discounts!) How do we want to define bad ass in our 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond?

*Title 9 was passed in 1972.  Most often associated with women’s sports, the United States law also applies to academics and activities beyond sports: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Patty Smyth still rockin’ it (Goodbye to You, 2020)!

Siouxie, still spellbinding in her late 60s!
